Some people have some confusion about XPlaneUpdate (XPU), so we wanted to make several important points very clear before you run XPlaneUpdate for the first time.

1. XPU only allows existing version 7+ users to update their X-System to the latest version(s). XPU works only for version 7+, and you must own a version 7 master CD to fly out of demo mode (version 7), or you must own a version 8 master CD/DVD to fly out of demo mode (version 8).
   
   
2. XPlaneUpdate is not a product or service of Austin Meyer or Laminar Resarch (the author of X-Plane). It is a service operated independently from Austin by David Spotts and the XPlaneUpdate Team.
   
   
3. XPU is a subscription service, not free (currently 99 cents for the first 2 weeks, then $9.95/year - not per month!) and your subscription fees cover the hi quality servers needed to provide the service reliably, development / maintenance of the software, as well as a significant amount of work that must be done to the over 5000 files that make up the X-Plane version 7+ fileset(s).

4. You do not have to use XPlaneUpdate. You can manually download the 350+MB releases from www.x-plane.com and use this manual, error-prone, long, frustrating process if you so choose. When you get tired of the manual process, you'll understand why XPlaneUpdate is such a value and convenience.
   
   
5. Until you subscribe, which is usually done conveniently while running XPlaneUpdate, you will have certain limitations:
   
   A) You will be nagged (asked to subscribe) fairly frequently (based on how many bytes you have downloaded)
   
   B) Every so often XPlaneUpdate will quit - you can usually restart it to continue your update
   
   C) If you reach a certain download limit which we feel is more than reasonable in order to try the product/service, you will be considered a freeloader, and XPlaneUpdate will not run / allow you to finish unless you subscribe.
   
   
6. You can try out the service with no nags and no limitations for a full 2 weeks for just 99 cents. If you're not happy, just cancel your subscription via PayPal before the 2 week period is over. This is virtually risk-free and allows you to use XPU without the nags or limitations above.
   
   
7. To be safe, we recommend you duplicate your current X-System 7 folder and name it "X-System 7 Finals" before running XPlaneUpdate and use XPlaneUpdate to update that folder until you are comfortable with using XPU.
   
   
8. You are responsible for your subscription - if you no longer wish to continue using XPlaneupdate, you must cancel your subscription via PayPal ... (please see here) Refunds will not be given for unused subscriptions / payments.
   
   
9. You are responsible for your subscription! - If you lose your original subscription / forget you had one / reinstall XPU due to a system crash, etc., please use the find your subscription link or contact us.
   
   Refunds will not be given for duplicate subscriptions / payments.
